FM Qureshi draws UN's attention to India's 'draconian measures' in IoK

Drawing the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet's attention towards Indian occupied Kashmir (IoK), Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in a letter has urged the UN to call upon India to rescind its unilateral actions and restore fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people.

This is Pakistan's second letter to the high commissioner for human rights, the first one was sent on August 4. The foreign minister also had a telephonic conversation with Bachelet on August 8.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Qureshi's letter highlighted a detailed context and consequences of India’s 'illegal and unilateral actions of August 5 2019'. The foreign minister drew Bachelet's attention to the several facets of the seriously deteriorating human rights and humanitarian situation in Indian occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IOJ&K).

Mazari asks UN to form commission of inquiry on India’s violations in Kashmir

Qureshi voiced Pakistan’s deep concerns over the intensification in human suffering and further breach of the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people. He said that as a result of India’s enhanced draconian measures to implement its illegal actions, dire humanitarian situation that has arisen.

"The letter underscores that India’s actions constitute flagrant violations of the UN Charter, relevant Security Council resolutions, international law and India’s own solemn commitments," the MOFA statement further reads.

The Foreign Minister’s letter is being shared with the UN Security Council and all members of the UN, the statement added.
