Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) lawmaker Syed Naveed Qamar Friday said it is the sole right of the Parliament to decide whether or not it wants to include any length of disqualification for legislators in the Article 62 of the Constitution.
Speaking on floor of the National Assembly, he said the Articles 62 and 63 have been included in the Constitution during the regime of a military dictator, therefore they are ambiguous. He said that nobody has the right to add anything in the Constitution except the Parliament.
PML-N legislator Captain Mohammad Safdar (Retd) said that the Constitution is a symbol of the federation and it has helped save the country during the martial laws. He said the Constitution had been suspended by the dictators despite presence of Article 6 in it. He demanded that General Musharraf who toppled the PML-N government in October 1999 in a bloodless coup should be brought back and made to face the treason trial.
Safdar said that Pakistan will be a strong country if the 1973 Constitution is protected and implemented in letter and spirit. Speaking on the floor of the House, Sahibzada Nazeer Sultan said that he is the only person in the present assembly who had signed on a copy of 1973 Constitution. He said that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto gave the Constitution that was agreed upon by all political parties. Sultan also announced to resign from politics, but he was quick to add that his son will contest next election from his seat. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf member Dr Shireen Mazari pointed out the quorum and later the House was prorogued.
