India's Leander Paes set a new Davis Cup record on Saturday when he notched up the 43rd doubles win of his 28-year career in the competition. Paes, 44, teamed up with Rohan Bopanna to overcome China's Gong Mao Xin and Zhang Ze 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/3) in the tie in Tianjin to overtake Italy's Nicola Pietrangeli as the Davis Cup's most successful doubles player.
Paes made his Davis Cup debut in 1990 and has since competed in 56 ties, amassing a total win-loss record in singles and doubles of 91-35. He has also won 18 doubles titles at the Grand Slams - eight in men's and 10 in mixed. "At this pace @leander will be unstoppable. Congratulations on becoming the most successful doubles player ever in Davis Cup," tweeted India's cricket legend, Sachin Tendulkar. India won the weekend tie against China 3-2 to qualify for the World Group play-offs later this year.
