Sindh Gover-nor, former justice Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui died here on Wednesday at a hospital at the age of 78. He was suffering from acute chest and respiratory tract infections. Justice Siddiqui, who was sworn-in as the 31st Sindh governor on November 11, 2016 in place of long-serving provincial governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad, remained in the office for two months till he breathed his last on January 11, 2017. Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Khan Durrani will serve as acting governor of the province till a new governor is appointed.
Justice Siddiqui had earlier served as the chief justice of Supreme Court of Pakistan from July 1, 1999 till January 26, 2000. He was forced to quit the apex court by the former army chief and president General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf when he refused to take a fresh oath of the office under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO).He had also served as chief justice of Sindh High court in 1992.
Justice Siddiqui, who was born in Lucknow on December 1, 1938, received his early education in Dhaka and then moved to Karachi. After doing his graduation from Karachi University, he got himself enrolled as an advocate of the Sindh High Court in 1963 and that of the apex court in 1968. He held various positions in Karachi Bar Association until he was appointed as a judge of the SHC in May 1980. Meanwhile, Sindh government, on the sad demise of Justice Siddiqui, has announced a day's mourning on Thursday.
CONDOLENCES: Expressing deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Justice Siddiqui, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family members to bear the irreparable loss. Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister for Information Maula Bux Chandio said that Justice Siddiqui was a noble man and his services in the judiciary will always be remembered.
MQM-Pakistan chief Dr Farooq Sattar, SZABUL's founding vice chancellor Justice (Retd) Qazi Khalid Ali, also prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and give courage to the bereave family to bear the irreparable loss.
FUNERAL: The Namaz-i-Janaza of the late governor will be offered at Polo ground/Governor House after Friday prayers. A spokesman for Sindh Governor House said that body of the late governor had been shifted to a mortuary in DHA.
