UNSC slams killing of Pakistani peacekeeper in D.R. Congo

UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council condemned "in strongest terms" Saturday's attack against a UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in which one Pakistani peacekeeper was killed and another injured.

The attack against the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) took place near Lulimba, 96 km south west of Baraka, in DRC's South Kivu Province.

In a statement to the press, the 15 Council members expressed their deepest condolences to the family of Naik Naeem Raza, the victim, the Pakistani authorities and the United Nations, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

The members of the Security Council underlined that deliberate attacks targeting peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law. They called on the Congolese authorities to swiftly investigate this attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

"The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for the stabilizing action of MONUSCO and its contingents," the statement said.
