A parliamentary watchdog questioned Kenyan Vice-President Moody Awori on Wednesday over allegations he was involved in a multimillion dollar graft scandal that has rocked east Africa's richest country.
Awori is under intense pressure from the opposition, media and civil groups to step down over his alleged role in the "Anglo Leasing" scam, in which contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars went to a phantom firm.
Awori's motorcade swept into parliament and the 78-year-old veteran politician known as "Uncle Moody" spent nearly two hours testifying before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), which examines government spending.
"We've had very good exchanges in the committee. I came to clarify matters," Awori, known for his grandfatherly demeanour, told reporters after emerging from parliament.
Awori has rejected calls to resign and denied accusations he helped cover up large payments in the Anglo Leasing case.
"I did not at any time engage in any act of cover-up or any wrongdoing," Awori said in a statement given to reporters. "I do not know who the Anglo Leasing Company Ltd is and I have never dealt with this entity or its officers."
