Sanjay Dutt wept in grief on Thursday as he declared he was officially giving up his battle against the court’s verdict regarding his illegal acquisition of firearms from those responsible for the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.
The Bollywood actor’s supporters had been encouraging him to file an appeal in the Indian Supreme Court, excusing him from his remaining three and a half years in prison.
Sanjay Dutt, who is the son of Hindu father Sunil Dutt and Muslim mother Nargis, maintains he bought the weapons only to protect his family during the Muslim-Hindu riots of 1993, fueled by the demolition of the Babri mosque in the Indian town Ayodhya.
However, in an emotionally charged press conference on Thursday, where Dutt ended up embracing his sister Priya Dutt, the shattered star accepted his fate and reportedly intends to surrender before his three-week deadline.
Best-known for playing an endearing gangster in “Munnabhai M.B.B.S.”, Dutt has received several sympathizing messages on Twitter since his sentence was announced. Also, India’s big names, including actor-politicians Jaya Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha sought pardon for the actor.
Before going to jail, Dutt needs to finish filming for T. P. Agarwal's “Policegirl” and dubbing for the remake of Apoorva Lakhia’s “Zanjeer.”
