KARACHI: Earning $44.7 million at its opening weekend, the pre-historic animation “The Croods” finally topples “Oz the Great and Powerful” off its numero uno spot at the US box office.
Directors Kirk De Micco (“Racing Stripes”) and Chris Sanders (“Lilo and Stitch”) are delighted by the success of their film. The studio too expected $40 million and was delighted that they nailed the $45 million mark. Almost the same as Dreamworks’ hit “How to Train Your Dragon.” The 3D comedy grossed a stunning $108 million worldwide.
The Croods by DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox narrates the tale of the world’s earliest caveman family of six on their first adventurous road trip after the cave they call home gets destroyed.
Its rich voice cast includes Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage (“National Treasure”), Ryan Reynolds (“Green Lantern”) and Golden Globe nominee Emma Stone (“The Amazing Spider-Man”).
The one and a half hour long fun flick is rated PG for mildly scary action and promises to be a treat especially for evolution-geeks.
Also beating Oz this weekend at $30.5 million was the thriller “Olympus Has Fallen”, from Antoine Fuqua, the director of “Training Day”, with its star-studded cast including Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman.
