Ecnec to take up Dasu hydropower project today

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) meeting today (Thursday) would consider multi-billion rupees Dasu hydropower project, it is learnt. Sources told Business Recorder that Ecnec meeting to be presided over by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar would consider nine items on the agenda mostly power sector projects with Dasu hydropower project on priority.

Ishaq Dar also explained Pakistan's point of view to his Afghan counterpart during telephonic conversation. The Finance Minister stated that since the Dasu hydropower project is on River Indus and not on Kabul River therefore, Afghanistan should not have any reservations on the project.

The project was presented in last Ecnec meeting for approval but was deferred by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar due to cost issues. Dasu hydropower project cost has been estimated at Rs 685.493 billion in PC-1. On the basis of exchange rate of Rs95/$, the Ecnec may be submitted a revised PC-1 with increased cost due to exchange rate depreciation. The Dasu project was considered by the CDWP in its meeting held on January 16, 2014 and was recommended to the Ecnec. Sources said the Ecnec would also consider 72MW Khan Khawar hydropower project, Kurram Tungi Dam, Gomal Zam as well as Nagdar hydropower project, etc.
