British Council holds symposium for career counsellors with representation from school, higher education sector

LAHORE: The British Council Education UK department organised the first ever National Symposium for Career Counsellors attended by participants from across Pakistan specifically from school and the higher education sector. This two-day symposium provided excellent professional development and networking opportunity for career counsellors. The symposium was held at the Beaconhouse National University (BNU) and was attended by over 150 counsellors.  The event was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Sartaj Aziz followed by a panel discussion. The panellists included Nadia Kamran, Head Education UK, Prof. Salima Hashmi, Dr. Sabiha Mansoor and Dr. Hafiz A Pasha.

Sartaj Aziz in his welcome address emphasized the importance of Career Counseling at all educational levels and appreciated this initiative by the British Council Pakistan for assembling the counselors on a single platform. He suggested documenting the proceedings of various sessions which can serve as a handbook for those related to the profession of career counselling.

The attendees and the speakers included some of the most prominent names from the education and corporate sector in Pakistan. Amongst the speakers/trainers were professionals in career counselling, psychologists, business entrepreneurs as well leading academics.

Nayyar Ali Shah of The Northern Consortium (NCUK) said, "A grand assembly of educationists from all over the Pakistan. Well thought of agenda, brilliant panelists and eloquently conducted sessions. Great effort on part of the British Council."

Rahila Narejo, CEO Narejo HR said, "The symposium was an interesting mix of thoughtful, insightful and motivation speakers and sessions. I greatly enjoyed the entrepreneurship panel discussion as it presented diverse perspective and presented a positive and proactive future for Pakistan."

The British Council, Education UK is constantly making an effort to take initiatives that will help increase and strengthen the capacity of education and career counsellors, as well as develop their understanding about the UK education system.

An Education UK Online Training was offered for the first time to school and university counsellors with aim of providing in-depth knowledge about the UK education system. A career counselling post graduate certification/Diploma is also being offered in collaboration with the University of Warwick for professional growth and development.

The National Symposium for Career Counsellors, packed with plenary and parallel sessions on a variety of topics as well as moderated discussions on pressing issues around counselling, career guidance and education was just another step by British Council to strengthen relationships with and among career counsellors.
