BANGKOK: The Thai government got bids from exporters for just 90,000 tonnes of rice in its first tender for grain from its stockpiles, in which it offered 350,000 tonnes, a Commerce Ministry official said on Monday.
"There was one exporter who offered to buy 30,000 tonnes of broken grade rice and three exporters who offered to buy a total 60,000 tonnes of 5 percent grade white rice," the official said, asking not to be named.
The government has built up massive stockpiles under its current intervention scheme and needs to sell some to make way for the next crop as well as to finance the scheme.
