The messaging firm WhatsApp is bringing major changes to its privacy policy, as it will now share its user’s data with the parent company, Facebook.
The move was announced by the messaging giant in a blog post. “Today, we’re updating WhatsApp’s terms and privacy policy for the first time in four years,” it stated in the blog.
“[B]y coordinating more with Facebook, we’ll be able to do things like track basic metrics about how often people use our services and better fight spam on WhatsApp.
“Facebook can offer better friend suggestions and show you more relevant ads if you have an account with them. For example, you might see an ad from a company you already work with, rather than one from someone you’ve never heard of.”
The move comes as the messaging platform seeks to use the user information i.e. the users’ phone numbers for advertisements on Facebook and WhatsApp, and also to improve the company’s services.
However, as per Independent, people are not happy with WhatsApp decision as they believe that their personal information like chats etc could be compromised as part of Facebook deal.
The change may be small but an important sign that the Facebook-owned WhatsApp has to concede some of its privacy values, it is famous for.
