Google has been recently very active issuing new products and updates, however getting phone makers and carriers to update to the latest version of Android has remained one of biggest issues that the tech giant face.
According to Bloomberg, Google is now looking serious to counter this problem, and how it is going to do that? Well, by publicly “shame” device makers and carriers who don't keep up to date with latest Android software updates.
As per the report, Google has created a ranking system that would rank smartphone manufacturers and carriers "by how up-to-date their handsets are, based on security patches and operating system versions."
The list is initially being shared with Google's partners; however, the company is considering making that list public, i.e. "shaming" the companies so that they perform better job at keeping their customers' handsets up to date.
The move came as only 7.5 pc Android devices run on the latest Android OS Marshmallow, as compared to Apple’s, whose 84pc devices run on the latest iOS software, said the report. The situation has been accepted by Google, as Android chief Hiroshi Lockheimer said, "It’s not an ideal situation," at Google’s I/O developer conference.
He also considered the lack of updates as "the weakest link on security on Android."
