After years of speculation, regarding when Google would bring its very own modular phone, it seems that the Project Ara has received yet another delay, however, this time to 2017.
Yes, you heard it right Project Ara, Google’s modular smartphone project has faced another roadblock. As per The Verge, the company is moving its ambitious Project Ara modular smartphone team out of the ATAP (Advanced Technology and Project) lab.
The move came as Google seeks to push into mobile market, by making smartphones’ hardware that are as customizable as apps.
The report further added that ‘Ara phone’ is going to hit shelves in 2017, which would be the first time Google has ever built its own phone hardware. One should know that Goolgle’s Nexus phones were built by partners i.e. Huawei, HTC etc.
According to Wall Street Journal, Google’s announced the release of modular phones at its I/O conference, which would be released to developers later this year, whereas, a consumer launch would take place next year.
“Ara is our vision for the future of phones,” said Dan Kaufman, who took over the advanced-technology group last month.
The Ara device will run on Google’s Android mobile-operating system and if Google can get Ara right, it would result in the first big steps towards the next generation of smartphones.
