Sony, the Japanese giant has merged its PlayStation business, into a separate entity called ‘Sony Interactive Entertainment’ (SIE).
The newly formed company is a combination of the Tokyo based Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Sony’s videogame unit, and California based Sony Network Entertainment International LLC, which provides PlayStation’s network services. The company will be head quartered in San Mateo, California.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the change in the setup would be effective from April 1st.
“It makes sense for us to put headquarters functions in the U.S. because we have a lot of important business partners in the U.S. and a lot of changes in the industry we need to deal with promptly tend to appear there first,” a Sony Computer Entertainment spokeswoman said.
According to The Verge, the new-born company would be run by Andrew House, who would its President and CEO.
"By integrating the strengths of PlayStation's hardware, software, content and network operations, SIE will become an even stronger entity, with a clear objective to further accelerate the growth of the PlayStation® business," House said in a statement.
According to a Japanese industrial body Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association, US remains is the biggest videogame market in the world at above $10.4 billion, followed by close second Europe’s at $9.4 billion.
