SUVA: Fiji Airways on Tuesday warned of likely delays across its international network for up to a week after a runway shunt damaged one of its Airbus planes.
The carrier, formerly known as Air Pacific, said one of its A330-200 aircraft was preparing to leave the western city of Nadi for Los Angeles on Saturday night when there was "an unforeseeable tarmac incident".
It said equipment operated by ground handling company ATS damaged the plane, forcing it out of service.
The Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reported that an ATS loader backed into the cargo section of the jet, one of only three A330s owned by the airline.
Fiji Airways board member Stefan Pichler said the situation was disappointing.
"This incident will be extremely costly and we're working hard on two fronts -- to ensure that the aircraft is fixed and returned to service as soon as possible, and to manage our passengers affected by the resulting disruptions to our network," he said in a statement.
"The incident was beyond our control and we share the frustrations of our customers and apologise to them."
Fiji Airways said delays were possible for the next week and advised customers to contact the airline.
