LONDON: European stock markets closed lower Wednesday as concerns over the situation in Libya and the wider Middle East drove up oil prices sharply.
In London, the FTSE 100 index of leading shares lost 1.04 percent to 5,923.53 points while in Paris, the CAC 40 was down 0.92 percent to 4,013.12 points.
In Frankfurt, the DAX shed 1.69 percent to 7,194.60 points.
