ISLAMABAD: The Presidents of Pakistan and Tajikistan on Tuesday jointly performed the ground breaking of the new Tajik embassy complex here at the diplomatic enclave.

The US 4 million dollar project would be completed in two years time over a covered area of around 8,000 square yards. Both Pakistan and Tajikistan have provided free of cost land for their respective embassy buildings.

President Emomali Rehmon and President Asif Ali Zardari in brief remarks said the construction of the new embassy was a reflection of their close friendship and would further strengthen the deep rooted ties between the two countries.

President Zardari assuring all assistance to Tajikistan in the completion of the project and said both the countries were keen to strengthen infrastructure and energy connectivity and further promote trade and economic cooperation.       He hoped President Rehmon's visit will add a new chapter to the bilateral relations between the two countries.

The President said Pakistan and Tajikistan enjoy deep rooted bonds of brotherhood and friendship.

"We have common history, culture and traditions ... common heroes and literature," the president and said

He said both the countries would cooperate closely to promote stability, peace and prosperity in the region.

President Emomali Rehmon said his country accords high priority to its ties with Pakistan. He also noted with appreciation the role Pakistan played during the days of domestic conflict in Tajikistan, and to bring peace and stability.    He mentioned its role in the holding of an inter-Tajik dialogue in Pakistan in this regard.

The Tajik President said the recent exchange of high level visits and interaction would help Pakistan and Tajikistan enhance their relations in all areas, with a particular focus on trade and economic activity.

He said his country wishes diversified cooperation with Pakistan in all fields and desires that the two countries learn from the experiences of the other.

On arrival at the venue President Asif Ali Zardari was received by the President of Tajikistan. A young Tajik girl presented him a bouquet.

A group of Tajik children attired in their national dresses sang the national anthems of the two countries. Each child also spoke a few words about the merits of deep friendship and the love between their people in Urdu and Tajik languages. President Zardari waved and appreciated their gestures.

He along with the Tajik President performed the ground breaking by laying bricks. They also planted two saplings to mark the historic occasion.

A number of diplomats attended the event and exchanged pleasantries with President Rehmon.
