Tuesdays barbaric carnage that took the lives of 140 plus innocent souls at the Army Public School in Peshawar will leave an ugly scar on the nations collective memory.
The bloodshed may be termed the states failure to protect its citizens. But it is equally the societys failure to protect its own from the ideological disease that underpins these inhuman forces. It is shockingly unfathomable how certain quarters in the society are still calling these events as a part of Americas war.
Nay! Regardless of its origins and regardless of how Pakistan has played pawns in the game, let there be no doubt that this is our war; let us not wait for a messiah to clean up someone elses mess in our own backyard. When our children die, its our war. Period. Let us start owning up to it.
The message that it is our war, should be spread across every nook and corner of the country, through every TV channel, radio, newspaper, school, university, and official memorandums. And indeed the pulpits (minbar) - that sadly haven come out as unequivocally and vociferously against the forces of terrorism as they should - must start owing the war too.
Through the 80s, the 90s and even thereafter, almost every alternate Friday sermon encouraged the young and able to fight for Jihad in the lands near and beyond. If the social fabric is to be protected from being torn apart, then the same pulpits must be used to weed out the ideological roots of misguided Muslim militants and other rogue elements.
That the pulpit still holds clout across the length and breadth of this country is an unquestionable reality. So its about time that political as well as military leaders use that clout to order a reverse indoctrination by de-militarizing the religious minds.
However, a successful ideological operation will only be effective if the state (read: army) is willing to do away with its proxies it had developed for eastern and western borders decades ago. Ergo, let there be no soft corners for any particular kind or brand of militant group.
Lastly, continuous ideological operation must be backed by uninterrupted military operations, for a period of relaxation may give the enemy the time to regroup. Much time has already been lost between 2008 and 2013. Let there also be no complacency; let us not leave any stone unturned until the menace is completely eradicated.
Just last weekend, members from BR Research team had visited Peshawar, Kohat and Karak, and it then seemed the fear had left the streets. Vox populi revealed that most were happy with the military operation Zarb-e-Azb and were looking forward to similar military operations across the troubled region. But then it takes one incident - just one incident like the one on Black Tuesday - to push us back to Stone Age. Our guns must not stop until each single militant is dead or captured. God speed!
