Anyone and everyone with a heart, felt the Peshawar tragedy deep inside. The massacre was to a scale where words could not describe the pain.
It all dates back to when Pakistan fed Afghan Mujahidins in Americans war against Russia invasion in Afghanistan and after Soviet Unions exit from Afghanistan, the nursery nourished on the mantra of Kashmir against India.
That has increased the hostility with India and never allowed the socioeconomic potential gain between the arch rivals to materialize. The worst form of second generation Mujahidins transformed into Talibans and what not in the aftermath of assuming, yet again, Americans war against terror as ours.
The good omen is that all political parties stood united on Peshawars attack and publicly showed consolidation despite strong ongoing political rivalry. But conscious citizens of Pakistan must realize that both the PML-N and PTI have soft corners towards various militant wings. We need to get out of this syndrome and act united and clear against the enemy within us. It would have been better, had the political leadership taken approvals on counter terrorism strategy in yesterdays APC.
The PMs announcement of lifting moratorium on death penalty to execute militants in custody is a right step from a government that has generally been shy of taking such actions. There should be a strategy devised to provide security to the judges and witnesses in cases of terrorism as the life threats to people dealing in cases hinder the process of justice. Its of utmost importance to eliminate sympathizers within military and political parties. A few attacks in the past could not have been possible without insiders help who are synced with militants ideology.
Apparently, key institutions dual policies are breeding such conflicts and splits amongst masses. The New York time editorial wrote yesterday "the army has long played a double-game, taking American aid while supporting and exploiting various Taliban groups as a hedge against India and Afghanistan, and ignoring the peril that the militants have come to pose to Pakistan itself. The extent of cooperation among those groups in the tribal areas has made that game even riskier; the Pakistani military has long provided support for the Afghan-focused Taliban, even while trying to fight the Pakistani Taliban in recent years. Intelligence experts say the army is still collaborating with the Afghan Taliban in fighting the government in Kabul".
The need is to stop feeding these monsters as they are connected one way or the other to each other. The mastermind of Peshawar attack is reportedly in Afghanistan. That is why COAS was on a trip to Kabul to seek Afghan military and NATOs help to combat terrorists linkage there. There are evidences that suggest Haqqani networks links with the TTP and the armed forces should be indiscriminate in eliminating all form of militants.
Concurrent efforts are required to undo the social engineering of the last forty years which has entrenched extremists ideologies within various social factions. As aptly said by a criminal justice expert, "if a human being is capable of doing this, the enemy is not terrorists or the state of imperial powers; the enemy is inside us all and is destined to win". Here is hoping that the tragic losses bring out the best from all relevant corners of the society. Eliminating the terrorists with all might possible should be goal number one. Nothing less will suffice now.
