With the today’s fat lifestyle people of all ages, particularly the young generation has become vulnerable to fall into depression, which ultimately leads to suicidal tendencies. Facebook in this regard has taken an initiative to stop this alarming trend.
The social media platform has released tools which can hopefully save lives, the company announced yesterday.
The ‘Facebook Saftey’ tool developed “in collaboration with mental health organizations and with input from people who have personal experience with self-injury and suicide, these tools first launched in the US with the help of Forefront, Lifeline, and Save.org,” the company said in a post.
Now how does it work? Using this tool, Facebook’s 1.65 billion users can now flag alarming comments they consider suicidal with a drop-down menu. After which Facebook will provide users with message templates to communicate with their friends posing suicidal or self harm tendencies, and will provide resources i.e. suicide-prevention hotlines and self-help tips.
“We have teams working around the world, 24/7, who review reports that come in. They prioritize the most serious reports like self-injury,” Facebook said.
According to New York Post, Facebook latest initiative has garnered wide acclaim. “A young person can be scared to share his experiences (with depression) to someone directly because he doesn’t necessarily know the response he’s going to get, or if (the other) person is prepared to handle what he has to say,” said Dan Reidenberg, a psychologist and executive director of Save.
“On Facebook, he can share that he’s in trouble and a support system will be there to give him the help he needs, whether from loved ones or strangers.”
