The US has returned the ancient sculpture of Buddha to Pakistan, which was stolen from Swat in 1980’s.
According to BBC, the rare sculpture of Buddha, dated back to 2nd Century, was taken from the Swat valley and smuggled to USA, the sculpture worth’s more than $1 million.
As per The Australian, the piece called ‘Buddhapada,’ was returned by New York prosecutors to Pakistani deputy chief of mission Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, who said that it will remain in the city for the time being and might possibly be put on display.
Sheikh said the Buddhapada was "an important element of the cultural history of Pakistan" and he was relieved to have it returned. The sculpture weighs nearly 250 kilograms.
The piece was "so much more than a piece of property," said Manhattan District Attorney, Cyrus R Vance Jr.
"It's an ancient piece that speaks to the history and culture of Pakistan that should be celebrated and protected," he told the Associated Press
