LOS ANGELES: A-listers Kate Winslet, Matt Damon and Sylvester Stallone all took home prizes at the Golden Globes on Sunday at a star-studded gala that kicked off Hollywood's annual awards season.
But all eyes at the annual gala held in Beverly Hills were on which movie would win the coveted award for best motion picture drama -- and whether Leonardo DiCaprio would win the best actor drama prize for "The Revenant."
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu won the best director Globe for the film, an epic survival thriller about legendary fur trapper Hugh Glass, who is played by DiCaprio.
Winslet won for best supporting actress in a film for her role in the biopic "Steve Jobs", and Damon won for best actor in a comedy for "The Martian" -- which also took the prize for best comedy or musical film.
Stallone meanwhile won for best supporting actor in "Creed," in which he reprised his iconic role of boxer Rocky Balboa.
The ceremony -- which launches Hollywood's award season that culminates with the Academy Awards on February 28 -- is seen as a good indicator of which movies and actors will fight for Oscars glory.
Hosting the glittering gala was British comedian Ricky Gervais, who dished out his trademark raunchy humor, targeting Caitlyn Jenner, Mel Gibson and Jennifer Lawrence, among many others.
"Shut up, you disgusting, pill-popping deviant scum!" he said by way of greeting the crowd at the Globes gala organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
While some industry pundits predicted "Spotlight" -- a movie about the Boston Globe journalists who uncovered sexual abuse in the Catholic Church -- would win for best drama film, the race for the night's most coveted prize was up in the air.
"I think 'Spotlight' is going to win partly because it's a celebration of journalism and there are some 90 journalists who are voting on this," said Timothy Gray, awards editor for trade magazine Variety.
"But I wouldn't bet my money on it because there are other possibilities," he said. "This year, there is genuine suspense."
Other films vying for the best drama film prize are "The Revenant," lesbian romance "Carol" starring Cate Blanchett the harrowing kidnap tale "Room," and the summer action blockbuster "Mad Max: Fury Road."
