Actor Aamir Khan is under fire after commenting on intolerance in India. Conservative Hindus are enraged by his suggestion that India has become increasingly unlivable because of religious discrimination. Indian extremist party Shiv Sena has also asked him to leave the country and go to Pakistan.
According to The Hindu, Maharashtra Environment Minister and senior Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam said, “He was a celebrated actor till now. But now it seems that we handed over milk to a snake. If he does not want to stay here, he can go to Pakistan”.
Khan’s comment that his wife Kiran Rao had suggested moving from the country drew strong criticism with several Twitter users calling him ‘antinational’ and some even stating that they won't buy from ecommerce marketplace Snapdeal until it removed the actor as its brand ambassador.
Bollywood veteran actor Anupam Kher also posted a series of tweets criticising the comment and reminding the superstar that it's the country that made him Aamir Khan. “Dear Aamir Khan, When did ‘Incredible India’ become ‘Intolerant India’ for you? Only in the last 7-8 months?” said one of his posts. Aamir Khan was the brand ambassador of the tourism ministry's ‘Incredible India’ campaign till recently.
Sena also said, “He made a movie like ‘PK’ criticising Hindu religious figures and released it, yet he believes India is intolerant. Aamir appears like a hero in shows like ‘Satyamev Jayate’ and then says he wants to leave the country,” IBNlive reported.
