The Disney's famous fairytale ‘Cinderella’ grossed an estimated $70.1 million at the North American weekend box office after its initial release last week.
According to media reports, ‘Cinderella’ enchanted audiences this weekend, racking up a royal $70.1 million to lead the domestic box office and a massive $132 million globally. ‘Cinderella’ has turned out to be the top 6 highest March opening weekend at box office in 2015. However, ‘Cinderella’ could not beat 2010's 'Alice in Wonderland' which collected $116,101,023 and landed on the 2nd place.
The adaptation of the classic fairy tale follows ‘Walt Disney Studios' strategy of raiding its library of animated favorites to refashion as live action blockbusters. Reportedly, at the box office delivering a $132.5 million worldwide debut for Kenneth Branagh's princess tale ‘Cinderella’ including an estimated $70.1 million domestically from 3,845 theaters and a record-breaking $25 million in China.
This Disney romantic/fantasy movie stars ‘Downtown Abbey’ star Lily James as Cinderella with Cate Blanchett as her evil stepmother and fellow ‘Downtown’ star Sophie McShera and Holliday Grainger as her stepsisters. The Prince is played by Richard Madden.
