imageDukhtar, a persian word literal meaning ‘Daugther’ is an upcoming ‘Women centric’ movie directed by a visionary filmmaker Afia Nathaniel has generated quite a buzz before its release.

According to media reports, Nathaniel wrote ‘Dukhtar’ while undertaking an MFA in Film Directing at Columbia University in New York. A nail-biting, ambitious drama/thriller set in northern Pakistan; ‘Dukhtar’ follows Allah Rakhi and her young daughter, Zainab, who are on the run. The production is based on a human rights issue significant to South Asia; child marriages. On discovering that her 10-year-old daughter is to be wed to a tribal leader, Tor Khan, Allah Rakhi embarks on a tense escape from her village with her little girl in tow.

It has been an emotional journey for Nathaniel as she somehow relates herself to the character. The ups and downs she has seen in her early life became an inspiration for her to come up with such social issue. The production took ten years to complete the project, a period during which the filmmaker had a daughter herself. She said, “The journey has been more personal, all emotional and all the more satisfying”.

In Pakistan, however, the coming months will see women leading the way to the revival of Pakistani cinema. Zeba Bakhtiar is co-producing the testosterone-fuelled, Shaan-starring spy thriller ‘Operation 021’. Fizza Ali Meerza is producing ‘Na Maloom Afraad’, the story of three hapless men in Karachi, featuring Fahad Mustufa, Javed Sheikh and Mohsin Abbas Haider.

The movie is all set to hit theatres on September 18 across Pakistan.
