imagePopular myth, chocolate is bad for health has now proven wrong in various researches. Dark Chocolate is now included in the ‘Healing Foods Pyramid’ as part of a balanced, whole foods, plant-based diet.

Dark chocolate which is made from cocoa seed is loaded with nutrients which can positively affect the human body. Various studies shows that dark chocolate not only helps to reduce risk of heart diseases but also helps to control blood sugar, control mood swings and lower the risk of getting dental cavities.

According to foreign media reports, “Dark chocolate, made from the cocoa bean, is rich in a class of plant nutrients called flavonoids,” says Jennifer McDaniel, MS, RD, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “The main type of flavonoid with antioxidant qualities is flavonols, which have been shown to lower blood pressure, boost blood flow, and reduce blood clots”.

Studies show that eating a small amount of dark chocolate two or three times each week can help lower down the blood pressure. Dark chocolate increases blood flow to the brain and to the heart, so it can help improve cognitive function. Dark chocolate also helps reduce your risk of stroke.

Dark chocolate is high in vitamins and minerals which are good for the health. It also protects the skin from the sun as the flavonols keep the skin hydrated and protect skin damage.

However even with this much health benefits, this doesn’t mean people should go all out and consume lots of chocolate every day. It is still loaded with calories which can harm the body. Be aware that a lot of the chocolate on the market is not up-to the mark. You need to choose quality dark chocolate with 70% or higher cocoa content.
