MCCI demands uninterrupted gas supply to industries

Multan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) has sharply reacted on the suspension of natural gas to industries for indefinite period terming it an anti-industrial move and detrimental to country's exports. President MCCI, Khawaja Muhammad Usman said that gas suspension had crippled the industrial activities and put the $16 billion industry on the brink of disaster.

He criticised the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines for suspending gas supply to the textile industry. In a statement on Tuesday, Khawaja said the industry was totally confused on how to combat the crisis. The textile mills were left with no choice but to lay off workers due to cut in 50 percent of the production capacity.

He said Pakistan's textile and value-added industry was losing its credibility internationally as it was forced to dishonour its export commitments. He reiterated his demand for uninterrupted and regular supply of gas to industry.

He urged the Prime Minister, the ministers for textile industry and petroleum and natural resources to take immediate notice of the situation and act swiftly to save the textile hub of the country.
