HC to India: Basit among hopefuls

Abdul Basit, a career diplomat is among the other hopefuls to be appointed as Pakistan High Commissioner to India after the government changed its plan to pick Syed Ibne Abbas for the coveted slot, it is learnt. Sources said the government has dropped the plan to appoint Abbas in New Delhi as Pakistan's new High Commissioner for replacing the outgoing Salman Bashir whose contract has expired but he has been asked to continue until the appointment of a new one.

According to the sources, Abdul Basit who is currently Pakistan's Ambassador to Germany is among the hopeful career diplomats to be appointed in New Delhi. Basit was earlier nominated to take over as Foreign Secretary, as the incumbent Jalil Abbas Jilani will be moving to Washington to assume his new assignment as Pakistan Ambassador to the Untied States.

But the plan was dropped last week and the sources said that Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhary, the incumbent spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has emerged as a strong nominee for the office of the Foreign Secretary. The sources further said that Syed Ibne Abbas is likely to be appointed as Pakistan Ambassador to Germany after confirmation of Abdul Basit's appointment for New Delhi.
