PORT ELIZABETH: South Africa has released five players for domestic duty after they were deemed surplus to requirements for the Springboks' Rugby Championship opener against Argentina on Saturday.
Coach Allister Coetzee has released uncapped fullback Warren Gelant and prop Lizo Gqoboka to the Blue Bulls, loose-forward Oupa Mohoje and centre Francois Venter to the Free State Cheetahs, and utility back Dillyn Leyds to Western Province for their respective Currie Cup matches this weekend.
Mohoje's release, among those confirmed by South African Rugby on Tuesday, is a surprise as he started in the Boks' first test of the year, a victory over France in June, before injury ruled him out of the remainder of the series.
The Boks defeated France 3-0 to show a return to form after a dismal 2016 that saw them lose eight of their 12 tests, the worst season in the country's history.
