BAHAWALPUR: Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah Tuesday said reforms would have to be introduced for swift disposal of 1.2 million cases pending in courts across 36 districts of the province, including the LHC.

He urged lawyers to respect judges as it would strengthen judiciary, besides bar-bench relations.

He was addressing a ceremony here arranged in his honour by LHC Bahawalpur Bench Bar Association.

The chief justice said around 1.1 million cases were pending in courts throughout the province and over 100,000 cases at the Lahore High Court. Reforms should be introduced for early disposal of the cases, he added.    He said mediation centers had been set up at every district, which had been helping in timely disposal of cases.   He said lawyers fraternity should not be concerned that establishment of mediation centers would affect their income.

"Lawyers will receive their fee from clients as per routine but their cooperation to mediation centers would help in timely disposal of pending cases," he said, adding cases pending for 15 years were disposed of at mediation centers within 15 minutes.

He said for further strengthening judiciary, lawyers would have to respect judges. "Respecting judges means strengthening judiciary," he said.

He said clash happened when judges ignore ethics, grace and rules or lawyers did not respect them. He underlined the need to resolve issues through dialogues which were reported between judges and lawyers. "Lawyers should come on table to resolve issues," he said and offered his services in this regard.

He said after consultation with the judges, he allowed the people of Lodhran district to file their petitions and cases, either at Multan Bench or Bahawalpur Bench.

He said that computers, printers, internet connections and other IT related facilities were being provided to all bar associations at district as well as tehsil level across the province.

He assured that he would play his role in resolution of all legitimate issues confronted by the lawyer fraternity of Bahawalpur.

Meanwhile, the CJ LHC was presented lifetime membership of Lahore High Court Bahawalpur Bench by the bar. Earlier, he inaugurated E-libraries at district bar association and high court association, respectively.
