lhc1024LAHORE: A Lahore High Court division bench on Thursday converted death sentence of four persons, who were convicted on charges of killing 25-year-old Farzana Bibi with bricks near the LHC, into life imprisonment.

The division bench headed by Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan passed the orders while hearing an appeal filed by the convicts - Farzana's father Azeem, Mazhar, Zafar and Jahan Khan - against their sentences by the trial court.

During the hearing, the defence counsel arguing before the court submitted that the trail court had awarded death sentences to the convicts despite lack of evidence. He pleaded with the court to set aside the sentence.

However, the prosecution opposed the request and submitted that the trial court awarded the sentence on basis of solid evidence.

But, after hearing arguments, the court converted death sentence into life imprisonment.

Farzana, a resident of Nankana Sahib, had married Muhammad Iqbal against her family's wishes. The family got registered a kidnapping case against her husband but Farzana had filed a petition before the Lahore High Court to get the case quashed.

The matter was fixed before a single bench on May 27, 2014 and Farzana was set to record her statement in favour of her husband.

Farzana, her husband and in-laws, left the office of their counsel at Fane Road for appearing before the court. The alleged killers - the woman's father Azeem, and other family members, intercepted her and killed with bricks.
