David Rockefeller, the worlds oldest billionaire and Head of Chase Manhattan, passed away on Monday morning in Poncantico Hills, New York . He was 101 years old.

According to a family spokesperson, Rockefeller, the last remaining grandchild of Americas first billionaire, Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller, died peacefully at his familys estate in Pocantico Hills, New York. The cause of death was congestive heart failure, Forbes reports.

As an heir to Rockefeller legacy, David Rockefeller lived all his life in impeccable splendor and privilege. After the death in 1979 of his older brother Nelson A. Rockefeller, the former vice president and four-term governor of New York, David Rockefeller stood almost alone as a member of the family with an outsize national profile.

Only Jay Rockefeller, a great-grandson of John D. Rockefeller, had earned prominence, as a governor and United States senator from West Virginia. No one from the familys younger generations has attained or perhaps aspired to David Rockefellers stature.

His charitable service earned him a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honor, in 1998.

At the time of his death, Rockefeller was worth an estimated $3.3 billion, making him the planet's 604th richest person, according to FORBES' real-time billionaire rankings.

Rockefeller held a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago and controlled Chase Manhattan bank for more than a decade.

He was also remembered for his benefaction to philanthropy and the arts, preserving his family's close relationship with the Museum of Modern Art.

He had six children - David Jr, Richard, Abby, Neva, Margaret and Eileen - with his wife Margaret (nee McGrath). She died in 1996.
