The auction of Indian Premiere League (IPL) 2017 was filled with record setting picks, as cricketers were selected on handsome pay checks. But it also brought tragedy to an aspiring cricketer, after he lost a lucrative spot in the IPL due to a case of mistaken identity.
On Monday, various Indian news outlets incorrectly reported that in-form domestic batsman Harpreet Singh had been arrested after an incident at a railway station in Mumbai whereas, it was a cricketer named Harmeet Singh, a left-arm spinner from Mumbai, who'd been taken into custody.
This case of mistaken identity ruined the IPL dreams of Harpreet Singh. As though, the names in the news updates were later corrected but it was too late. According to a franchise representative, Harpreet remained unsold at the auction as he saw an incorrect tweet of Harpreets arrest.
"I'm mentally disturbed," Harpreet told The Indian Express. "How can one clear that? I am getting calls from everyone asking 'what have you done?'
"I was hoping to be picked up at the IPL auction ... when my name came, the franchises must have felt 'why take a player who is in police custody?'
The franchise official confirmed that they were interested in picking up the young cricketer, but changed their decision after his incorrect news of arrest.
"We wanted to buy him, but as news came of Harpreets arrest, we decided not to do so since it would give the franchise a bad image," said the official.
