imageISLAMABAD: Five member German parliamentary delegation wrapped up its five-day visit to Pakistan Friday during which it discussed ways to further cement cooperation between the two countries in diverse fields.

The five parliamentarians visit focussed on discussing the further strengthening of German-Pakistani relations governance, education, health and energy sectors. Pakistan is among the top recipients of German Development funding, said an embassy news release here Friday.

Members of the Committee for Economic Cooperation and Development of the German Parliament (Bundestag), included Committee's chairperson Dagmar Woehrl and the Vice-president of the German Bundestag, Claudia Roth who had arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday.

During their visit German parliamentarians called president Mamnoon Hussain, Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Chief of Army Staff Gen. Raheel Sharif. They also held a very productive meeting with the Women Parliamentary Caucus.

The visit included meetings and talks with civil society members and high-ranking journalists as well as representatives of the textile industry and trade unions. The delegation also visited a diverse range of development projects around Islamabad and Lahore.

The parliamentarians raised several issues related to the implementation of the 27 conventions that are linked to the Generalized System of Preferences Plus status granted by the European Union to Pakistan. In particular, they raised empowerment of and equal rights for women, labour rights and social standards in the textile industry and ban on child labour.

Dagmar Woehrl, Chairwomen of the Development Committee stated "Pakistan is a country with huge potential.

However, some major challenges still need to be addressed in order to achieve equitable and sustainable economic growth. Germany will continue supporting Pakistan's development through bilateral development cooperation in the areas of Governance, Energy, TVET and Health."
