imageRAWALPINDI: Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Friday announced start public transport service for women commuting between the twin cities and Sowan-Haji Camp from February 17.

The service titled "Tabeer" being initiated as a pilot project in collaboration with RTA, Al-Abrar Associates and ZONG Flutter with the aim to ensure safe, secure, comfortable and economical transport service for women.

Briefing reporters here, Secretary RTA, Awais Manzoor Tarar said primarily twelve 16-seater hiace vans would ply on Route No.1 and 7 from 07:00 a.m. to 07:00 p.m. with only five minutes break at starting and ending points.

He said the branded vans equipped with cellular phone facility, would be driven by male driver, however, conductors would be ladies for guidance of the passengers.

Tarar said terminal for the service has been set up at RTA office where the fleet would be parked and operated in an effective manner.

He said any transporter wishing to ply their vans under the pilot project would be welcome as Punjab government has plans to extend the facility to other parts of the province. To a question, the Secretary said, RTA has the role of regulatory and supervisory body in execution of the project, while private sector would ply vans and arrange the required staff.

"Fare of the transport service will be at par with public transport operating on other routes," he said replying to another question.

Following is the Route No.1 for ladies transport service; Haider Road Saddar, Railway Station, Mareer Chowk, Moti Mahal, Committee Chowk, Waris Khan, Naz Cinema, Central Hospital, Sadiqabad, Rehmanabad, Shamsabad, Faizabad, Zero Point, Fire Brigade, Aabpara, Melody, GPO, Polyclinic Hospital, F-6/1, Super Market and Pak Secretariat. While, Route No.7 is; Haji Camp, Golra Morr, Kohinoor Mills, Pir Wadhai Morr, Chur Depot, Chairing Cross, Radio Pakistan, Race Course Ground, MH Chowk, Railway Station, Kamran Market, Mareer Chowk, Distict Courts, Morgah Morr, Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, SOS Village and Sowan Camp.
