ISLAMABAD: National Assembly is set to elect its 19th Speaker through secret balloting today.
In the earlier years of Pakistan, the President of Legislative Assembly worked as Speaker of the Assembly. Father of nation Mohammad Ali Jinnah remained President of the first Legislative Assembly from 11-08-1947 to 11-09-1948.
Maulvi Tamizuddin Khan was the second President of Legislative Assembly, who served from 14-12-1948 to 24-10-1954. Abdul Wahab Khan was the third Speaker of the country, who served from 12-08-1955 to 7-10-1958, Maulvi Tamizuddin Khan was elected Speaker for second term from 11-06-1962 to 19-08-1963.
Fazlul Qadir Chaudhry remained Speaker from 29-11-1963 to 12-06-1965, Abdul Jabbar Khan served the country as speaker from 12-06-1965 to 25-03-1969, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was President from 14-04-1972 to 12-04-1973, Fazal Ilahi Chaudhry from 15-08-1972 to 09-08-1973, Sahibzada Farooq Ali served as Speaker from 09-08-1973 to 27-03-1977, Malik Meraj Khalid served from 27-03-1977 to 05-07-1977, Syed Fakhar Imam from 22-03-1985 to 26-05-1986, Hamid Nasir Chattha from 31-05-1986 to 03-12-1988, Malik Meraj Khalid (second term) served from 03-12-1988 to 04-11-1990, Gohar Ayub Khan from 04-11-1990 to 17-10-1993.
Yousaf Raza Gillani remained Speaker from 17-10-1993 to 16-02-1997, Elahi Bux Soomro from 16-02-1997 to 20-08-2001,Chaudhry Amir Hussain from 19-11-2002 to 19-03-2008 and Fahmida Mirza from 19-03-2008 to 3-6-13.
