KARACHI: Saudi Arabian telecommunication authorities are most likely to impose a ban on the use of internet messenger applications such as Skype, Viber and WhatsApp due to encrypted connections, which cannot be monitored by the government.
According to sources, the operators have been told by local telecommunication providers to furnish means of control and the commission gave service providers one week warning to take measures to ban them. Moreover, the decision of banning instant messaging applications was “in accordance with regulatory procedure”.
Earlier, the usage of BlackBerry had been banned in year 2010 by the Saudi authorities due to encrypted communication causing great hindrance in monitoring information and to fight terrorism and crime.
Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are already banned in a few Muslim countries.
