WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been admitted to a hospital in New York for treatment after doctors discovered a blood clot had formed, stemming from concussion she suffered several weeks ago.
The State Department said Clinton is being "treated with anti-coagulants and is at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital so that they can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours."
"Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion. They will determine if any further action is required," spokesman Philippe Reines said in a statement.
Clinton, 65, will leave the job as top US diplomat soon after President Barack Obama's second term inauguration in January. Obama has named Democratic Senator John Kerry to succeed her as Secretary of State.
Hillary Clinton was suffering from a stomach virus earlier this month when she fainted due to dehydration, causing the concussion. She spent the holidays with her family last week after working from home.
The globe-trotting American diplomat logged more than 400 travel days and nearly a million miles during her term as secretary of state, according to a media report. She was scheduled to return to work at the State Department this week.
