ISLAMABAD: Speakers at 2nd SAARC Chiefs of Public/Civil Services Commissions on Tuesday stressed the need for promoting cooperation among the member countries to benefit from each others experiences.
"Every step that we take collectively in the interest of our public can be a harbinger of peace and harmony in this region," they said at a meeting of Public/Civil Service Commission of SAARC Member States here.
Mian Raza Rabbani, Chairman Parliamentary Committee on National Security addressing the members of the SAARC commissions said there is a dire need to get benefit from each other's experiences that would be beneficial to further strengthen the civil service system in SAARC countries.
He remarked that Pakistan, in particular and other member countries in general, would gain tremendous experience from this conference.
Rabbani while highlighting the role of civil service said that its role in any society is very important thus we should look at the new emerging challenges and pull our socks to achieve this uphill task.
He was of the view that civil servants play a pivotal role in any country's progress which means their selection is also of great importance that should be transparent and purely on merit.
Earlier, Chairman Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) of Pakistan Justice (R) Rana Bhangwandas in a welcome address said that we live in a region today where good governance is not just a desire but has become an obligation and rising population imposes more and more limitations on our resources.
He said the governance structure are made and run by civil servants who have to deliver their best in the face of all odds and conflicting needs and circumstance. Despite, the diversities of every system, the commonality of our responsibilities lies in public service commissions striving to attract and select the best available quality of government servants needed for running governmental machinery, he maintained.
Bhangwandas said that we need to exchange our experiences and challenges to be able to achieve the common objective of running governmental machinery.
He said since its inception, in Pakistan, the FPSC has maintained an iconic role in public service in the filed of recruitment and selection of public servants for the Federation.
It was also tasked with the framing of recruitment rules for posts of civil servants of the federation and for advice to the government on all matters that referred to it, he added.
Delegates from all SAARC countries also shared their experiences and highlighted challenges confronting to their commissions.
They also stressed for promoting cooperations among the SAARC countries in order to further improve their performance.
