nationa-assembly-ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Sub-Committee on Information and Broadcasting on Friday directed the Press Council of Pakistan (PCP) to play its proactive role for the implementation of code of conduct for media.

 

The committee met at the PCP Secretariat with Bushra Rehman in the chair.

 

Bushra Rehman said that the committee wanted to strengthen the PCP and would extend all kind of assistance in this regard.

 

Briefing the committee, PCP Chairman Raja Shafqat Abbasi said that the council was established in 2002, but was made functional in 2012.

 

He said that press councils were working in around 87 countries.

 

The PCP has always looked towards parliamentarians for the guidance, he added.

 

He said that despite several hiccups and hurdles, the PCP would keep playing its mandated role.

 

Abbasi said that the council had been taking up the matter with Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments to get passed the Right to Information Bill in the next session of respective assemblies.

 

He said that the governments of Balochistan and Sindh had already been asked to implement the laws on access to information.

 

He said tha the PCP was holding consultation with all the stakeholders for preparation of guidelines to cover the next elections.

 

The PCP Chairman said for the promotion of ethical journalism in the country was imperative that the working condition of the journalists should be improved.

 

The meeting was also attended by MNA Shakeel Awan, PCP and Law Ministry officials.
