Badrinath, Harbhajan salute India's winning start

indian-teamPORT OF SPAIN: Subramanian Badrinath and Harbhajan Singh, two of the architects of India's opening victory on their tour of the Caribbean, said the result would help the confidence of the side in the five one-day matches to come.

Badrinath made 43 to lead India to 159 for six in the Twenty20 International on Saturday at Queen's Park, and Harbhajan followed up with two wickets, as West Indies stuttered to 143 for five.

"This is a good start for me and the team," said Badrinath. "I am happy that the team and I have started so well.

"It's not my first time in the Caribbean. I visited for (the World Twenty20), but I never got the chance to play. The conditions are similar to what we get in India, so that helped us in this game."

India were scrambling on 63 for four at the halfway stage of their innings, and required a 71-run stand between Badrinath and Rohit Sharma to get them back on track.

"We were thinking that once we got the team to 140, that would have been a decent total," said Badrinath.

"It was tough to bat because the conditions were a bit damp, and it was drizzling a bit. But we got to 159, with some good shots towards the end, and we were happy."

Harbhajan and Yusuf Pathan both scored 15 not out towards the end to beef up India's total, and then played his usual role with the ball.

"The sun started to come out towards the end of our innings and when they batted, and the batsmen were able to play a lot more shots," he said. "But we stuck to our task well, and we got the victory.

"We just want to take it one game at a time. We have got a quality side, although it's a young side, many of them have done well in the IPL and on the domestic circuit, and we are all looking forward to the remainder of the tour.

"West Indies will be keen to put up some keen performances against us, and we know they can be a tough side, so we do not want to take anything lightly.

"We want to go out there, and play the way we know we can play, and hopefully, once we stick to our processes, and play to our potential, we should come out on the winning side."

Harbhajan is one of the few easily recognised faces in the Indian side that has made the trip to the Caribbean. Others have been sidelined either through injury, or rest.

He said though he has kept a punishing schedule in recent months with the World Cup and the Indian Premier League, he was looking forward to coming matches, including the five One-day Internationals and three Tests in the Caribbean, followed by the tour to England.

"It has been a lot of cricket this season, but this is the only thing I know, if I am not playing cricket, I do not know what I would be doing, so I am enjoying each and every moment playing for India, and it is always special to play in the Caribbean," he said.

India face the same number of matches on their tour to England between July 15 and September 16.
