KhanKARACHI: The evening clinics started at National Institute of Child Health (NICVD) in February this year has gained immense popularity among the heart patients of the city.

Executive Director, NICVD, Prof. Khan Shah Zaman told APP on Wednesday that these clinics have particularly helped in providing primary angioplasty support to the mid-income group patients.

"The essential and emergency medical support was provided to patients who were either suffering from heart attack or at high risk to the condition," elaborated the surgeon in reply to a question.

He said the patients visiting or brought to the NICVD evening clinics mainly comprised white collar people who were unable to visit hospitals in the morning hours, due to job constraints.

"They are the mid-income group unwilling to visit government hospitals in the rush hours and also unable to pay the consultant's fee in their private clinics," he said.

Primary Coronary Angioplasty Program, he said is otherwise too available round the clock, seven days a week, complimented by state of art cath lab meeting needs for patients from different parts of the country.

The NICVD evening clinics are being conducted by senior cardiologists and cardiac surgeons of the institute for three hours on every working day.

Prof. Khan Shah Zaman said besides the emergency procedure, the evening clinics also cater to other relevant cardiac care needs of the white collar patients.

"All these are being provided at highly subsidized rates and a nominal fee of Rs. 600 that includes consultancy fees, ECG and hospital services," said the NICVD chief.

As for primary angioplasty, he said the relevant patients are needed to stay in the hospital for a day or two and paucity of space remains a problem.

We need to have 200 more beds so as to accommodate the massive increase in the number of patients however; PC One for the expansion in the institute's admission capacity has been overlooked by the concerned authorities for past two years.

"Financial constraints are cited to be the major hindrance in acceptance of the proposal," he said.

In reply to another question, he said people undergoing primary angioplasty are required to pay only for the disposable items that come to around Rs.100, 000.

"The procedure including cost of disposables and services in other hospitals are made to pay Rs. 300,000 to Rs.600,000," he said.

Prof Shah Zaman said that there is constant increase in the incidence of cardio-vascular diseases as well as in the treatment expenses in the country.

"We need to motivate people not to ignore importance of Prevention as their physical, mental and financial well being is put on stake," he said.

Yet, keeping in view the ground realities and the fact that much younger population is arriving with cardiac ailment in the recent years a balance has to be maintained on prevention and proper medical intervention.

"Expansion in NICVD catering to the needs of people from the country can not be ignored," said the NICVD Chief.

He said NICVD is one the few public sector facilities where hi- tech invasive as well as non invasive interventions are provided to the patients in general at markedly reduced rates, even free for non- affording patients.

The NICVD Executive Director said coronary angioplasty, open heart surgery, valvuloplasty etc are performed at highly subsidized rates to the general ward patients.

"Our strategy to cater to maximum number of people has also led to adequate and optimum use of hi-tech gadgets available with us," he said.

The NICVD chief said the institute has its blood functional round the clock with the support of an NGO.

Prof. Khan Shah Zaman said the income generated from the evening clinics are being utilized for the treatment of non affording general ward patient.
